Recovery mode controller issue PS3?

I need to go into recovery mode on my PS3 and when I do it says "Connect the controller using a USB cable, and then press the PS button" So I do that and it doesn't work still. I have a pelican controller, I'm 100% the PS button works because it works when I play games and such, the controller also has a built in USB plug so it automatically uses a USB port...
