What does Critical elements exactly mean on a poetry analysis paper?

I have to write a paper comparing "the fish" by bishop and "the dark pelican" by cj sage.An example has irony (tone) for critical elements of focus but i was wondering is i can put personification down as mine. or please give me an example of any types of critical elements of focus. thank you so much.
