A flying question from someone that's never flown an ACTUAL plane.?

I know flight in Microsoft's Flight Simulation isn't the same as flying but why is it during one of the missions I'm told to idle the engines, turn flaps to 45, and nose up and still expect to make it to the runway a few miles away? I usually drift to the ground, ultimately crashing.
