Real life drop ships?

i know drop ships are things of science fiction but are the military or any privately owned company's developing anything like this? and im pretty sure the requirements are it can take of and land all on its own and doesn't need to be launched..a good example would be a pelican drop ship from halo...legit answers only please! thanks
