I am trying to find out what kind of fish I saw yesterday in the Chesapeake bay.?

It was brown,smooth, short and fat, and it had teeth. It looked nothing like a flounder. The weird thing is it was flapping in the sand in front of me and then it dug into the sand. I dug it up and checked it out for a bit and then let it go. I can't find any information on the internet about the one I saw though.
